What is Kundli Milan (Gun Milan)?

Kundli matching — Kundali Milan, Gun Milan, or horoscope matching — is the traditional first step of Hindu matchmaking: the boy's and girl's birth charts (kundlis) are compared to judge their compatibility for marriage. The classical method is Ashtakoot Milan, which scores the match across eight kootas out of 36 gunas. It's usually doneby date of birth (with time and place) for accuracy; a rougherkundli matching by name exists for when birth details aren't known. LunaAstro does the full date-of-birth match and then an astrologer reads both charts together — not just the number.

What the 36 gunas actually measure

Ashtakoota milan compares the two Moon positions across eight dimensions (kootas). Each koota carries a different weight, adding up to 36:

KootaPointsWhat it checks
Varna1Spiritual compatibility & ego balance
Vashya2Mutual attraction & influence
Tara3Destiny, health & wellbeing of the bond
Yoni4Physical & instinctive compatibility
Graha Maitri5Mental compatibility & friendship
Gana6Temperament match
Bhakoot7Prosperity & family harmony
Nadi8Health & progeny

How to read the score

  • 33–36 — excellent; rare and considered deeply harmonious.
  • 25–32 — very good; strong foundation for marriage.
  • 18–24 — good; workable with awareness of the weak kootas.
  • Below 18 — traditionally not recommended without a deeper chart-level look and remedies.

Two matches with the same score can be very different: a 24 with Nadi dosha needs more care than a 22 without it. That's why our reading goes past the number — it checks doshas and their classical cancellations, both partners' 7th houses and Venus–Mars placements, and the navamsa (D9) chart that Vedic astrology treats as the marriage chart itself.

Kundli matching — FAQs

How many gunas should match for a good marriage?

Out of 36 gunas, 18 or more is traditionally considered acceptable, 25–32 is very good, and 33+ is excellent. Below 18, most astrologers advise a deeper look at both charts before deciding — the score alone is never the full story.

What details do I need for kundli matching?

The date of birth, time of birth and place of birth of both people. The time matters most — even a difference of a few minutes can change the Moon nakshatra that the matching is based on.

What is Nadi dosha and is it always serious?

Nadi dosha occurs when both partners have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya) and scores 0 of 8 points. It is weighed seriously in tradition, but there are classical cancellations — for example when both have the same rashi but different nakshatras. A proper reading checks these before concluding anything.

Is guna milan enough to decide a marriage?

No — guna milan compares only the two Moon positions. A complete compatibility check also reads both 7th houses, Venus and Mars, the navamsa (D9) chart, manglik dosha and the timing both charts are running. That is exactly what the LunaAstro reading adds on top of the 36-point score.

What is manglik dosha in matching?

When Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a chart, the person is called manglik. Matching one manglik with another traditionally neutralises the dosha; other placements can also soften it. Our reading flags manglik status for both charts and explains what it actually means for the match.

Are kundli matching, kundali milan and gun milan the same thing?

Yes — Kundli matching, Kundali Milan, Gun Milan and horoscope matching all refer to the same practice of comparing two birth charts for marriage compatibility. The traditional scoring system behind them is Ashtakoot Milan, out of 36 gunas.

Can I do kundli matching by name, or is date of birth needed?

Kundli matching by name uses only the Moon sign and nakshatra tied to a name, so it is a rough estimate for when birth details are unavailable. Kundali matching by date of birth (with time and place) is far more accurate because it computes both full charts. LunaAstro uses the date-of-birth method for a reliable result.

Is this kundli matching calculator really free?

Yes. You get the full matching reading free when you sign in — the details you enter here carry over, so you do not have to type them again.
