Kaal Sarp Dosha
Also known as Kaal Sarp Yoga
When every planet is hemmed between Rahu and Ketu — dramatic in name, nuanced in reality.
What is Kaal Sarp Dosha?
Kaal Sarp Dosha forms when all seven main planets (Sun through Saturn) are positioned on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis — that is, all the planets are "swallowed" between the head (Rahu) and tail (Ketu) of the karmic serpent. There are twelve named types depending on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy.
Despite its ominous name, Kaal Sarp is not found in classical BPHS as a formal dosha — it is a later, popular concept, and its effects are widely exaggerated. Many highly successful people have it. It can indicate intensity, karmic lessons and delayed-then-sudden results, but it is far from the catastrophe it is often sold as.
How it forms (causes)
- All seven planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis
- Partial Kaal Sarp: one or more planets outside the axis (much milder)
- One of twelve types (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, etc.) by Rahu’s house position
Traditional effects
- Traditionally: struggle in early life, delays, sudden ups and downs
- Intensity, ambition and strong karmic themes
- Often "late bloomer" success — results after effort and delay
- Heavily dependent on which houses Rahu/Ketu occupy and the planets’ strength
Cancellation (Bhanga / Parihara)
- Even one planet outside the Rahu–Ketu axis breaks the full dosha
- Strong, well-placed planets greatly dilute its effects
- Benefic yogas elsewhere in the chart often outweigh it entirely
Remedies
- Worship Lord Shiva (Maha Mrityunjaya mantra); Nag Panchami and serpent (Naga) worship
- Rahu and Ketu mantras where the chart supports it
- Kaal Sarp Shanti puja at qualified centres only if truly warranted
- Focus on the whole chart — do not let the label create fear
