Mangal Dosha — being "Manglik" — is formed when Mars occupies certain houses in the birth chart. Because Mars is the planet of energy, aggression and passion, its placement in the houses governing marriage and partnership is traditionally said to create friction, delays or difficulty in married life. It is by far the most discussed dosha in Indian matchmaking.
In practice, Mangal Dosha is heavily over-feared. Classical texts list many conditions that cancel or neutralise it (Mangal Dosha Bhanga), and a great many happily married people are Manglik. It should never be judged from a single factor or cause a match to be rejected outright — it needs to be weighed against the whole chart.
How it forms (causes)
- Mars placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna (Ascendant)
- The same is also checked from the Moon and from Venus, not the Lagna alone
- Mars’s strength, sign and aspects matter as much as the house itself
Traditional effects
- Traditionally: friction, ego clashes or delays in marriage
- Possible temper or dominance issues if Mars is otherwise afflicted
- Emphasised only when Mars is genuinely weak or badly placed — a strong Mars gives drive, not disaster
Cancellation (Bhanga / Parihara)
- Mars in its own sign or exalted (Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn) — dosha greatly reduced
- When both partners are Manglik, the dosha is traditionally considered cancelled
- Benefic aspects (especially Jupiter) on Mars neutralise much of it
- Mars in certain signs/houses (e.g. 2nd in some signs, aspected by benefics) — Bhanga applies
- Age: the dosha is said to weaken significantly after ~28 years
Remedies
- Worship Hanuman and recite the Hanuman Chalisa (Tuesdays)
- Chant the Mars mantra "Om Angarakaya Namaha" where the chart supports it
- Kumbh Vivah or other traditional remedies only on qualified astrological advice
- Red Coral (Moonga) only after a proper consultation
- Above all: match the whole chart, not just the Manglik flag

Mangal Dosha (being "Manglik") occurs when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Ascendant (also checked from the Moon and Venus). It is traditionally said to affect marriage, but it is heavily over-feared and has many classical cancellations.
Is Manglik dosha really bad for marriage?
Usually not. Mangal Dosha is the most over-hyped dosha — it has numerous cancellations (Bhanga), weakens with age, is nullified when both partners are Manglik, and is only significant when Mars is genuinely weak or afflicted. It should never cause a match to be rejected on its own.
